Launched in 2009, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is a robotic spacecraft that is currently orbiting the Moon to create a 3D map of Earth’s nearest neighbor in space. The LRO lunar exploration mapping program is designed to identify safe landing sites for future human and robotic missions, to locate potential resources on the Moon, and to detect radiation levels.
